Claude Monet bought this house and its surrounding land in 1883 and spent the rest of his life shaping the gardens into the subject of his paintings — the famous water-lily pond, the Japanese bridge, and rows of flowers arranged more like a painter's palette than a formal garden. It's now a museum and working garden maintained to look almost exactly as it did in his lifetime.
